Meet Sage: Our Rescue Goat Living Her Best Life

Sometimes, life has a way of leading us to unexpected blessings. This is exactly what happened the day I came across a Facebook post about a herd of goats destined for auction. These goats had been used for everything from milk to meat to yard clearing and had endured frequent breeding cycles. Through no fault of their own, they were now in need of homes—or they’d face an uncertain future.

Initially, my plan was simple: bring home one Boer doeling and one Nigerian Dwarf doeling. But plans change, especially when you meet a soul like Sage.

Sage was a heavily pregnant Nubian mix whose rough coat and patchy hair told a story of nutritional deficiencies and years of wear. Her previous owner told me she’d given birth three times before, only for her babies to be sold for meat so her milk could be harvested. She was due any day now with her fourth set of kids, and I couldn’t bear the thought of her facing the same heartbreaking cycle again.

I hesitated at first, unsure if I was prepared to care for a pregnant goat from an unknown background. But something about her quiet resilience pulled at my heart. I wanted her to experience motherhood the way it should be—nurturing her babies without the fear of them being taken away. So, against my better judgment (and maybe because of it), Sage came home with me.

The Journey to Healing,

When Sage arrived, a vet confirmed what I suspected: she was underweight and dealing with nutritional deficiencies that could complicate her pregnancy. We worked hard to get her on a proper diet, monitoring her closely as she settled into her new home.

A few weeks later, Sage gave birth to two healthy, beautiful twin girls. Watching her care for them was nothing short of magical. She was the most attentive, protective, and loving mother. For the first time, she got to keep her kids, and it was clear how much that meant to her.

With time, Sage’s coat grew back, her body regained its strength, and her spirit truly came alive. Her old, worn collar was replaced with a new one, and she quickly established herself as the boss of our little herd.

Sage Today,

These days, Sage can be found living her best life in the alfalfa pastures. She misses no meals and is always first in line when treats are handed out—watermelon being her absolute favorite. She’s also a bit of a character, using boots as scratching posts and occasionally trying to out-headbutt Nala, our Livestock Guardian Dog.

Sage’s story is a reminder of the resilience of animals and the profound impact a little love and care can have. She went from being just another number in a herd to the queen of our farm, and we couldn’t imagine life without her.

If you ever visit the farm, make sure to say hi to Sage. She’ll probably greet you with a nudge (or demand a treat) and show you exactly what living your best life looks like.
